May the chariot of the fierce-rayed Sun God shine before me—a chariot spanning ten thousand yojanas in length and breadth, resting on a wheel with five spokes, three naves, and six shining rims, drawn by the seven meters (like Gayatri) as horses, and whose body consists of the varying times like ayanas and parts of the year.
Surrounded by Adityas, Apsaras, sages, great serpents, Yakshas, demons, Gandharvas, and Valakhilyas occupying a tenth of the chariot; established in the middle of the sky's sphere like a jewel; representing the transformation of the Supreme Brahman's light and the condensed essence of all Vedas—thus shines the fierce-rayed Sun.
Emerging from the sun's orb and entering the heart-channels of all living beings, dispensing nectar to the Vasus and other gods, arising from all directions, showering rain, heat, and snow, drawing water from everywhere, and producing the offerings for ancestors, herbs, and nectar for the gods—thus shine the rays of the Sun.
Among the thousands of rays pervading heaven, earth, and the five directions, the most excellent ones illuminate the moon, the stars, and the five planets starting with Mercury. At the time of cosmic dissolution, they become the seven suns that burn the three worlds. May these supreme rays of the Sun, beginning with Sushumna, destroy all my diseases here.
Ninety-six thousand other rays depend on the Adityas; divided month by month, they shine and purify the three worlds. When these rays—born from the seven primary rays and functioning to protect the world—do not properly circulate (as in intercalary months), auspicious activities like vows and sacrifices are not performed.
I take refuge in the Sun God, whose red body shines within the orb, pervading the universe with his light. Divided by morning, noon, and evening, he is worshiped via the Rig, Yajur, and Sama Vedas. He is the goal and the guide for the wise on the northern path, directly worshiped as Brahman, and whose rise dispels all fears.
Bow to the supreme deity drawn by seven horses, the root of the three worlds. Empowered by Him, the Adityas perform their duties like generating heat, snow, and rain, each having authority over their respective months, and whose supremacy is shown by Lord Vishnu Himself becoming the twelfth Aditya.
I worship the friend of the world, whose pleasure is enhanced by the celestial women, Gandharvas, Yakshas, great sages, serpents, and demons—organized in twelve groups of twelve—serving constantly through dance, song, holding the reins, offering praise, and serving in front, while the Valakhilya sages chant delightful Vedic hymns.
Day after day I behold the true Brahman in the eternal form of the Sun, whose birth occurred at the dawn of the universe from the Supreme Brahman; whose form is meditated upon via the three Vyahritis representing head, arms, and feet; and who is the singular subtle vital energy of all beings dwelling in the earth, sky, and heaven.
I surrender to the auspicious Brahman (Shambhu) present in the Sun, the eye of the world, seen within by yogis with focused minds; having a pure golden form and eyes like blooming lotuses; pleased by the chanting of the Rig and Sama Vedas; expressing the highest lordship over the desires of the world, completely transcendent of all flaws.
May that Supreme Shiva, our primeval physician stationed in the sun's orb, take away all afflictions. Worshiping Him in the syllable 'Om', which serves as the component of Udgitha devotion, removes all sins. Austere vows wherein His worship is the primary focus destroy all evils when He is meditated upon.
I constantly take refuge in Lord Shiva, the consort of Uma, the blue-necked, three-eyed, universal form, who is the inspirer of everyone's intellect, worshiped by the Gayatri mantra, shining as the Light visible even to cowherd women, present as the Purusha in the solar orb, and embodying the beginning, middle, and end (the Vedas).
His form is like a cloud, his chariot has a hundred parts, his orb consists of eternal words, his rays are thousands, among which seven are praised by the Vedas, numbering just under a hundred thousand. Four verses for each Aditya, and three for the primordial Sun god have been composed; these twelve Sragdhara meter verses reveal their respective powers.
By reciting this jewel among hymns to the Lord of the Day even once daily, a person dispels bad dreams, bad omens, all sins, incurable diseases, defects caused by planets situated in bad positions, and evil spirits. He attains stable wealth in this world and eventually achieves liberation.
Thus ends the glorious Sri Aditya Stotra Ratnam composed by Srimad Appayya Dikshita.
