Having heard the words of the divine sage Narada, the righteous and illustrious Sage Valmiki, who was supreme among speakers, worshipped him with great devotion along with his disciples.
Having been worshipped in accordance with scriptural rites, the celestial sage Narada bid farewell to Valmiki, and obtaining his permission, ascended to the heavens.
A short while after Narada had departed for the celestial realm, Sage Valmiki proceeded to the banks of the river Tamasa, which was situated not far from the holy Ganges.
Reaching the banks of the Tamasa, the sage gazed upon the clear, mud-free waters of the bathing ghat, and spoke thus to his disciple Bharadwaja, who stood close by.
"O Bharadwaja, behold this beautiful bathing place. Its waters are clear and serene, as pure as the mind of a virtuous and noble man."
"Place the water pitcher here, my child, and hand me my bark garments. I shall perform my ablutions in these sacred and excellent waters of the Tamasa."
Thus addressed by the high-souled Valmiki, the self-controlled disciple Bharadwaja reverently handed the bark garments to his preceptor.
Taking the garments from his disciple's hand, the sage, who had completely mastered his senses, wandered through the vast forest, admiring its natural beauty.
Near that spot, the holy sage saw a pair of lovely Krauncha (heron) birds disporting together, singing melodiously, completely inseparable and deeply in love.
As the sage watched, a wicked and cruel hunter, driven by sinful intent, shot down the male bird with an arrow, killing it on the spot.
Seeing her partner slain and covered in blood, writhing on the ground in agony, the female bird shrieked in deep, heart-rending sorrow.
She was separated from her companion, who possessed a copper-colored crest, was ever-joyous, and had glorious wings, with whom she had flown through the skies.
Witnessing the innocent bird struck down by the hunter and hearing the agonizing lamentation of the female bird, the righteous sage Valmiki was filled with intense compassion.
Out of deep compassion, the sage realized that this act of the hunter was a grave sin. Hearing the wailing of the female Krauncha, he uttered these words in a state of profound grief.
"O hunter! May you find no peace or stability for all eternity, for you have slain one of this loving pair of Krauncha birds while it was consumed by love."
Having spoken these words, the sage fell into deep contemplation, wondering: 'What is this that I have uttered, driven by the sorrow of this bird?'
Reflecting deeply on those words, the wise and illustrious sage came to a decision and spoke thus to his disciple Bharadwaja.
"Let this utterance of mine, which arose from my intense grief, which consists of four metered quarters, equal syllables, and can be sung to the accompaniment of a lute, be known as a Shloka, and nothing else."
The disciple Bharadwaja joyfully accepted the peerless words of his preceptor, memorizing them instantly, which brought great satisfaction to the sage.
Having performed his daily ablutions in accordance with scriptural rites, the sage returned to his hermitage, still contemplating the profound meaning of the verse.
The highly learned disciple Bharadwaja followed his guru back to the ashram, carrying the pitcher of water with a reverent and focused mind.
Entering the ashram, the illustrious sage sat down, engaged in deep spiritual thoughts, while his disciples gathered around him.
At that moment, the Lord of Creation, Brahma, the four-faced creator of the universe, arrived at the ashram to meet the great sage Valmiki.
Seeing the Lord of the Universe, Valmiki immediately rose from his seat in awe, and stood before him with folded hands and a humble heart.
Valmiki worshipped Lord Brahma with arghya, padya, and other customary offerings, bowing down in deep devotion to the creator.
Lord Brahma, having accepted the worship, sat upon a grand seat and motioned Valmiki to sit in his presence.
Seated before Brahma, Valmiki's mind was still haunted by the tragic incident of the Krauncha bird. He sat in silent contemplation, filled with grief.
He thought again of the cruel hunter who killed the bird for no reason, and in his heart, he repeated the verse he had uttered by the river.
"Ah! The wicked hunter committed a great sin by killing that beautiful, sweet-singing bird in the presence of its mate!"
As Valmiki repeated the verse in his mind, Lord Brahma smiled gently and spoke to the weeping sage.
"O Sage! The verse you have uttered is indeed a divine composition. Do not grieve, for it was by my own will that this speech arose from your lips."
"O best of sages! Compose the sacred history of Sri Rama, the righteous and glorious Lord of the Universe, in this very metered style."
"Describe the life of Rama, who is the embodiment of dharma, including his wisdom, his virtues, and all his deeds, as you heard them from Sage Narada."
"Reveal the hidden aspects of the lives of Rama, Lakshmana, Sita, and all the demons, both known to the world and those that remained secret in the forest."
"Every detail of this sacred history, whether public or private, shall be revealed to your inner vision by my grace, and not a single word of yours shall be untrue."
"Compose this glorious and meritorious epic of Ramayana, which shall bring blessings to all who read it, in this beautiful metered verse."
"As long as the mountains stand and the rivers flow on this earth, the sacred story of Ramayana shall endure and be sung by humanity."
"As long as the story of Ramayana is told on earth, you shall reside in my celestial realm, enjoying eternal peace and glory."
Having spoken these words, the Lord of Creation, Brahma, vanished from the sight of the sage, returning to his celestial abode.
Upon Brahma's departure, Sage Valmiki and his disciples were filled with absolute wonder and joy, repeating the divine verse again and again.
The disciples of Valmiki sang the verse with great devotion, marveling at how a cry of grief (shoka) had been transformed into a beautiful song (shloka).
The noble and wise Valmiki then resolved to compose the entire Ramayana, describing the glorious deeds of Rama, using this new and melodious meter.
In this manner, Sage Valmiki began the composition of the epic, describing the history of the Ikshvaku dynasty, the valor of Rama, and the destruction of Ravana. Hear now, O devotees, this sacred story of the Ramayana!
