In that city of Ayodhya lived King Dasaratha, a knower of the Vedas, a protector of all, far-sighted, highly radiant, and beloved by both city and country folk.
An outstanding warrior (atiratha) of the Ikshvaku race, a performer of sacrifices, devoted to righteousness, self-controlled, sage-like, and famous in the three worlds.
Powerful, having subdued his enemies, surrounded by friends, self-controlled, he was equal to Indra in majesty and Kubera in wealth.
Just as the radiant Manu protected the world, in the same manner King Dasaratha protected and ruled the world while residing in Ayodhya.
That excellent city was ruled by the truthful King Dasaratha, who pursued the three goals of life (Dharma, Artha, and Kama), just as Amaravati is ruled by Indra.
In that excellent city, the people were happy, righteous, highly learned, content with their own wealth, free from greed, and truthful.
In that best of cities, there was no householder who possessed meager savings, or who did not own cows, horses, wealth, and grains, or whose desires were unfulfilled.
Nowhere in Ayodhya could one see a lustful person, a miser, a cruel man, an uneducated person, or an atheist.
All men and women in the city were righteous, self-controlled, and in terms of character and conduct, they shone like pure-hearted great sages.
There was no one who did not wear earrings, a crown, or flower garlands, no one who had limited enjoyments, and no one who was unclean, unanointed with perfumes, or not fragrant.
No one was seen eating unrefined food, none was ungenerous, none was without armlets and gold necklaces, none lacked wrist ornaments, and none was lacking in self-controlled mind.
In Ayodhya, there was no one who did not maintain the sacred fire, no one who did not perform sacrifices, no one of low mind, no thief, and no confusion or intermixture of duties (varna-sankara).
The Brahmanas were always dedicated to their duties, self-controlled, active in giving charity and studying the Vedas, and restrained in receiving gifts.
There was no atheist, no liar, no one who was poorly read, no one envious, none incapable, and no unlearned person to be found anywhere.
Here there was no one who did not know the six auxiliary branches of the Vedas, no one without vows, no one who did not give thousands in charity, and no one who was wretched, distracted, or in pain.
In Ayodhya, it was impossible to find any man or woman who lacked radiance and beauty, or who was not deeply devoted to the king.
Among all the four social orders (Varnas), the people worshiped deities and guests, were grateful, generous, brave, and endowed with valor.
In that best of cities, all citizens lived long, adhered to righteousness and truth, and spent their days happily with their wives, sons, and grandsons.
The Kshatriyas were guided by the Brahmanas, the Vaishyas followed the Kshatriyas, and the Shudras were devoted to their duties, assisting the other three orders.
That city was excellently protected by the lord of the Ikshvakus (Dasaratha), just as it was protected in former times by the wise Manu, the foremost of men.
Filled with warriors who were radiant like fire, skilled in combat, impatient of insults, and masters of arms, the city was like a cave filled with lions.
The city was filled with excellent horses, equal in speed to Indra's steed, born in Kamboja, Bahlika, Vanayu, and the riverine tracts.
It was filled with mountain-like elephants of great strength, in rut, born in the Vindhya mountains and the Himalayas.

Ever filled with mountain-like elephants in rut, that city, expanding further by two yojanas, shone true to its name Ayodhya (The Unconquerable).
In which city residing King Dasaratha ruled the world, in that very city the glorious monarch, having subdued his enemies, ruled his subjects just as the moon rules the stars.
